Slave Narratives
Untertitel:ANG-V1
Dozent:Irina Brittner, M.A.
Veranstaltungstyp:Seminar (Offizielle Lehrveranstaltungen)
Beschreibung:In this course, we will explore slave narratives as a distinct form of literature that emerged in the U.S. in the 18th century. Commonly authored by former slaves who chronicle their struggle for freedom, these narratives are often considered to be precursory forms that have strongly influenced African American literary tradition. Yet, these narratives can be read to fit and display various generic conventions, from adventure tales and autobiographies to political propaganda. We will read several slave narratives as both literary texts with their own characteristics and communicative functions, and as commentary on U.S. American history and culture with a particular focus on the institution of slavery and abolitionism. We will also investigate how slave narratives and their formulas have been shaped and adapted through history by looking at the so-called neo-slave narratives that have been published in more recent times.

An academic paper, regular attendance and active participation in class are essential for passing this course. It is further expected that you are motivated and prepared to discuss the literary and theoretical texts in class. Further announcements will be posted on Stud.IP.
