Programmierpraktikum Internet Measurements: Application-friendly Link Evaluation
Untertitel:Application-friendly Link Evaluation
Dozent:Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Nils Aschenbruck, M. Sc. Kathrin Elmenhorst, M. Sc. Nikolas Wintering
Veranstaltungstyp:Praktikum (Offizielle Lehrveranstaltungen)
Beschreibung:Tools that measure link performance based on throughput, packet loss or latency usually transmit bulks of random data to fill up the link and thus observe the capacity and behavior under load. The transmitted data is therefore only used for measurement and is thrown away directly at the receiver. In order to measure the maximum possible performance of the (bottleneck) link, no application data may be transmitted during the measurement - otherwise the tool only measures the remaining capacity and unknown behavior of the parallel transmission can distort the results.

However, there are use cases where it is desirable that app data is transmitted during the link measurement. For example, if I want to measure the transmission rate of a sensor node to the base station and continue to receive sensor data at the same time. Or, if I want to measure the latency between my client and a server instance and download a large file from the server at the same time.
In the practical lab “Internet Measurements: Application-friendly Link Evaluation”, we will address this problem by developing an application-friendly measurement tool. Among other things, students will learn how common measurement tools work at the implementation level and work on a practical research-related problem.

Requirements: Computer Networks (Rechnernetze) or INF-ESS-K.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This practical lab will take place as a block course from 11.08.-05.09.2025.

The practical lab is limited to 12 seats, so preliminary enrollment will follow a First-In, First-Out (FiFo) schedule. Students beyond this limit will be placed on a waiting list. However, the final enrollment will take place during the information session (tbd), where the available 12 seats will be officially assigned. If an enrolled student is absent, a student from the waiting list may take their place. Note that the prerequisite for this lab is the course Computer Networks (Rechnernetze), or INF-ESS-K.
