Beschreibung
"Auditory display" is an upcoming interdisciplinary field, comprising computer science, human-machine interaction, artificial intelligence, and pattern recognition. In this study project, we will develop a system for 3d auditory display of the trajectories of persons walking inside a building. The scenario: Imagine a security guard monitoring a large building using multiple cameras, e.g., a garage. While the task is extremely tedious, it is still challenging, as a single guard may have 102 - 103 cameras to watch for conspicuous events, which might indicate robbery or theft. In addition, the layout of rooms, corridors, stairs etc. watched by the cameras may be highly complex. Auditoriy display of the trajectories of persons may be very helpful, since hearing supplies qualitative information of the location, orientation and speed of several persons at once. In the project, we will first acquire a video data set of persons (the participants) walking inside a building and implement algorithms for the extraction of trajectories. We will then provide auditory display by assigning pre-defined, parametrized sounds to the trajectories and events, e.g., the sound of footsteps, doors opening, elevators moving etc. Note the sounds are not the recorded original sounds made by people and objects, but artificially generated afterwards according to the visually extracted information. Thus we can implement a "virtual listener" who is able to move throughout the building to arbitrary locations, who can listen to trajectories and select appropriate cameras for viewing. A demo version should be made available on the internet. Finally, we will evaluate our system in a user study.
