Beschreibung
Physicalism, broadly construed, is the thesis that everything is physical. It is however unclear how this is to be spelled out in detail. What do we mean by "everything"? Do physicalists suggest that every thing or object is a physical object? Or is the suggestion rather that every property is a physical property? What does "physical" mean in the central claim? What is the relation to physics, conceived of as a scientific theory? Are we talking about current physics, or the potentially complete physics of some more or less distant future? What is it that makes an object or property physical, i.e. what is the very nature of the physical? What are the main arguments for and against physicalism? What is the role of mentality in that picture? What are the commitments a physicalist must make about counterfactual situations? We will address these issues in the course.
The main text basis for the course will be the following book:
Stoljar, Daniel (2010): Physicalism. New York: Routledge.

Note that some background knowledge in the Philosophy of Mind is highly recommended (e.g. "Introduction to the Philosophy of Mind Lecture + Seminar).
